Will You Use Google Wallet? Why Or Why Not?

If you haven’t heard the buzz about Google Wallet – here’s a quick breakdown on what it is, quoted from Google itself (read more here):

What is Google Wallet?

• “Google Wallet is a mobile app that will make your phone your wallet. It stores virtual versions of your existing plastic cards on your phone, along with your coupons, and eventually, loyalty and gift cards. Our intention is that Google Wallet will be an open mobile wallet holding all the cards and coupons you keep in your leather wallet today.”

Google Wallet – The Way To Pay Of The Future?

Despite all the claims of security, ease of use, etc… there is something about Goggle Wallet that just makes me feel weird about the whole thing. I mean, isn’t it strange that if your phone is lost or stolen you will have to go cancel your credit cards? Besides, who else thinks that Google has their fingers in way to many areas of our lives already?

Google Wallet definitely sounds convenient. I kind of wouldn’t mind it if I could quit carrying a wallet around, I’m so tired of bulging pockets that I’m almost ready to start wearing a fanny pack. Ummm, joke alert, I will never willingly wear a fanny pack. Seriously though, wallet in back, keys in one front pockets, big honking phone in another… It’s unsightly, and awkward, right?

I suppose the tech even exists that we could get rid of keys also and just carry our phone to act as a wallet, remote starter and somehow turn our car on and open our houses.

I like change, and for the most part, I like the trend toward one device doing everything, but the concept of one entity having access to our entire life just bugs the snot out of me.
Digital security will never be foolproof… lose your phone and someone now has potential access to your entire life? Uh-uh, not for me.

Will all of us take the safeguards necessary to protect our information like we should. No way, most of us are to lazy or uninformed, myself included.

What if Google Wallet changes significantly and begins to use our data in ways we never intended? Once the commitments are made to these new technologies, the price of going back gets pretty steep, and people will often sacrifice what they know is best for convenience sake.

What happens when Google starts influencing laws and regulation more than it already does? Where does this all end? I don’t think anyone knows how far all this integration can really go, and what the negative consequences of it really could be.

I think I’ll skip Google Wallet for now, stick to cash, and take my chances with pickpockets. What about you? I’d love to hear your comments on this subject.
